The origins of the Pitbull breed can be traced back to the 14th century in the United States. During this time, British immigrants selectively bred gladiator dogs, including the old Bulldog (which differs greatly from the modern Bulldog), for the purpose of engaging in brutal and savage spectacles. These dogs were trained to confront larger creatures such as bears or bulls in wild and inhumane shows. It is from this history of breeding dogs for fighting that the breeds we now recognize as Pitbulls emerged. Consequently, this breed exhibits remarkable strength and athleticism.
