Inside a ‘Dystopian’ Apartment Block Where That Houses Over 20,000 Residence.

A viral TikTok video showcased a massive building in China known as the “Dystopian Apartment,” capable of accommodating 30,000 residents. @fatheristheone shared the video using a drone, highlighting not only the impressive interior and unique design but also the sheer size of the structure that amazed viewers.

A lot of individuals have read a novel about a Dystopian society or know what it means. These novels usually depict a society living in fear or stripped of humanity. While most are fiction, some see them as a cautionary tale. In China, there is now an apartment building that can accommodate 30,000 people, equipped with all necessary amenities.

Qualities of the Dystopian Apartment

The Regent International apartment in Qianjiang Century City, Hangzhou, was designed by Alicia Loo, the chief designer of the Singapore Sands Hotel. It was built in 2013, stands at 675 feet tall, and houses approximately 20,000 residents. The building has an S-shape and either 36 or 39 floors, depending on the side. It is one of the most densely populated areas globally, with many residents living together under one roof.

The Regent International has over 30 floors with various amenities like restaurants, pools, and nail salons. It even has grocery stores and internet cafes. Everything you need can be found inside this “dystopian apartment”.

Many residents may never leave their homes again, which raises the question of whether they will miss out on fresh air and sunlight. However, it’s important to note that the residents are not compelled to stay indoors or live in a “dystopian apartment.” In fact, the majority of residents are young professionals, influencers, or college students who find living in an S-shaped building cost-effective and convenient.

Advantageous Living

Living at Regent International offers residents incredible convenience with all necessities under one roof. Affordability is also a major advantage. Units come in different sizes and prices, ranging from 1,500 RMB (around $200.00) to 4,000 RMB (just under $600.00) per month.

Some people are worried about it being a “dystopian apartment,” but others have praised its innovative design. It has also been hailed as “the most sustainable living building on earth.”

Amidst the housing crisis in the U.S., a unique opportunity arises. The idea of a “dystopian apartment” could offer a solution to increase living spaces without consuming large amounts of land. Interestingly, the city of Whittier in Alaska has already adopted a similar concept. They have a 14-story building where all 272 residents reside, resembling a hotel transformed into an apartment complex. This building, similar to one in China, provides a range of amenities including a church, school, post office, and police station.

Possible Downsides

Just like everything else, this also has advantages and disadvantages. The building has been called a “dystopian apartment” for a reason. Many people are curious about how so many individuals can live in one place. Americans generally prefer privacy and space from their neighbors. They like having a yard to relax in or for their dogs to play. However, a major drawback of this housing solution is that people will have very little personal space and limited opportunities to be outdoors or get fresh air. Fortunately, this issue can be resolved by taking a walk or renting one of the larger units in the Regent International, which come with balconies and offer some relief from living there.
