GOP-Led J6 Investigation To Be Its Own Committee This Congress

Georgia GOP Rep. Barry Loudermilk received assurances that his investigation into the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol will be formally established as a new committee. This was confirmed after he posed for a photo with House Speaker Mike Johnson to mark the start of the next Congress.

This move underscores the Republican Party’s ongoing effort to reshape the narrative of January 6, making it a central theme in their investigative agenda.

With the GOP now controlling both chambers of Capitol Hill and the White House, this is part of a broader initiative to continue GOP-led investigations from the previous Congress.

Loudermilk mentioned to CNN that while the details of the new committee are still being finalized, one option is to give Johnson more authority over the selection of panel members and the direction of the committee’s work.

The Republican efforts to shield President-elect Donald Trump from accountability for the January 6 violence remain evident, highlighted by the creation of a new committee to emphasize Loudermilk’s work, which included a report recommending the FBI prosecute GOP former Rep. Liz Cheney.
