My 4-Year-Old Pointed at My Husband’s Boss’s Wife and Said, ‘That’s the Lady Who Bites’
I brought my husband and our four-year-old to his boss’s lavish birthday party expecting awkward small talk and expensive wine. I did not expect one innocent sentence from my daughter to make the whole night go still.
The drive to Richard’s mansion felt longer than usual. Daniel sat in the passenger seat with his hands clasped in his lap, checking his phone every few seconds even though we were only ten minutes away.
“Please keep May close to you tonight,” he said for the third time that week.
“I will,” I replied, keeping my eyes on the road.
“I need this to go well, Claire. Really well.”
I glanced at him. His jaw was tight. His collar looked uncomfortable, though he kept tugging at it.
The drive to Richard’s mansion felt longer than usual. The evening sky had already begun to fade, casting long shadows across the winding road that led to the estate. Inside the car, however, the silence felt heavier than the darkness outside.
Daniel sat in the passenger seat with his hands clasped tightly in his lap. Every few seconds, he glanced down at his phone, checking for messages that never seemed to arrive. Despite being only ten minutes away, his nervous energy filled the vehicle.
“Please keep May close to you tonight,” he said, repeating the same request he had made several times during the week.
“I will,” Claire replied calmly, keeping her attention on the road ahead.
Daniel exhaled slowly, staring out the window before turning back toward her.
“I need this to go well, Claire. Really well.”
There was something in his voice that made her look over for a moment. His jaw was tense, and his expression betrayed the confidence he usually carried so effortlessly. Even his formal attire seemed to work against him. He tugged at the collar of his shirt again, as if it had become too tight.
Claire knew tonight was important. Richard’s gathering was more than just another social event. Powerful people would be there—business partners, investors, influential figures whose opinions could shape futures and fortunes. Daniel had spent weeks preparing for it.
“You’ve done everything you can,” she said reassuringly. “The rest is out of your hands.”
He nodded but didn’t seem convinced.
Outside, the lights of the mansion appeared in the distance, glowing against the darkening horizon like a palace from another world. The closer they got, the more magnificent it looked. Elegant gardens surrounded the property, and luxury vehicles were already lining the entrance.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Daniel looked at the mansion and swallowed hard.
Tonight could change everything.
