My Sister told me I owed her my Inheritance!
And in small print at the top was: PRIVATE ANNIVERSARY DINNER — 8 GUESTS Additional guest: payment only. For a moment, I simply stared at those words. Not because I was shocked. Because I wasn’t. Somewhere between the $5,300 total and the little phrase payment only, the last piece of doubt inside me finally disappeared. I had spent years wondering whether I was imagining things. Maybe Mom didn’t mean it that way. Maybe Courtney was just careless. Maybe Dad didn’t know.
Maybe I was being too sensitive. Maybe family was complicated. Maybe I should be more forgiving. Maybe I should stop keeping score. But there it was…
Printed on the restaurant’s paperwork.
Not in my imagination.
Not in my interpretation.
Not in an argument I could be accused of remembering incorrectly.
They had literally written down what I was to them.
Payment only.
Courtney leaned back in her chair.
She was wearing a cream-colored silk dress that probably cost more than my monthly mortgage payment.
She smiled.
“Well?”
I looked at her.
“What’s the question?”
She pointed toward the check.
“You’re going to take care of it, right?”
Dad frowned.
“Courtney.”
She looked at him innocently.
“What?”
“You said Rosemary wasn’t coming until nine.”
“She wasn’t.”
Dad looked at me.
“I thought you were eating with us.”
“I thought so too.”
Mom cleared her throat.
“Rosie, don’t make this awkward.”
I looked at her.
“I’m not the one who made it awkward.”
Her smile vanished.
Courtney sighed dramatically.
“Can we please not do this tonight?”
I almost laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because it was remarkable how quickly the person who had orchestrated the entire situation could become the person asking for peace.
