Baby With Red Birthmark Called ‘Hideous’ And ‘Defective’, But Wait till You See This Beautiful Child Now
Most people have physical features they feel self-conscious about, especially during their growing years. With time, most find self-confidence and learn to embrace their uniqueness. Some are even lucky enough to outgrow them. However, birthmarks often stay with us for life. One mother faced hurtful responses to photos of her baby girl born with a “Port Wine Stain.”
Born with a Notable Birthmark
Marianna Bowering from Australia gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Angelica, who was born with a Port Wine Stain birthmark. Unfortunately, Angelica has faced bullying because of it.
The birthmark attracted negative attention both online and in person. “In person, the most hurtful thing was when someone at a soccer game told me she was a ‘defect,’” Marianna shared. “He just said that to me and walked away. I was shocked.” Online, people have called Angelica “hideous” and said she “will never get a boyfriend later in life.”
Marianna also disclosed, “The worst comment online was when someone asked if her face had been pushed onto a skillet, saying her face looked grilled.”
Embracing the Birthmark
Contrary to the hurtful comments, Angelica’s parents see her birthmark as “a unique addition to her beauty that should be celebrated.” Bowering said, “I would never hide my little girl because of it. I think she is absolutely stunning. The thing I hate most is when people say she can just cover it with makeup when she’s older. Why should she cover it up? If she wants to flaunt it, she can.”
Angelica’s family has always encouraged her to love herself, birthmark and all. Sometimes they even highlight it with body glitter or paint it like a heart.
Interestingly, Marianna is so involved in supporting her daughter that she has become an “ambassador for the Vascular Birthmarks Foundation.” She said, “It breaks my heart to think of anyone being mean to her. But I see her now, and she is such a confident little girl. She isn’t afraid of anything.”
She concluded, “I am sure she is going to get through anything life throws at her. She is more than her birthmark. She is her own person, and she is no different from anyone else.”
Related Symptoms and Treatments
Port Wine Stain birthmarks can darken over time but are generally not a cause for concern. However, they can be associated with other physical conditions such as Carotid Artery Disease, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, and high blood pressure. Other conditions that commonly accompany the birthmark include glaucoma and Sturge-Weber syndrome. “Thankfully, we’ve done tests and Angelica is totally healthy,” Marianna said. “We just need to have regular check-ups, especially for her eyes as glaucoma can be a concern.”
The birthmark is a fairly common condition, occurring in 3 out of every 1,000 babies born, and it impacts every demographic. There is no known method of prevention, but treatment can fade it over time.
The most common treatment for Port Wine Stain is a ‘pulsed-dye laser,’ which is also used for treating Rosacea. “Gradually over several treatments, this lightens the skin, and in some cases, the stain may temporarily go away,” explained Dr. Gregory Levitin. However, it can often return over time. “In about 10 to 15% of cases, the skin not only darkens but thickens and enlarges, causing soft tissue changes,” Levitin explained. He also recommends reconstructive surgery for those who prefer to alter their birthmarks.
However, Angelica’s family has always encouraged her to embrace her appearance and do what makes her happy. In the end, we should all strive to accept our physical flaws and love ourselves as we are. Embracing birthmarks, stretch marks, and other scars can make life just a bit less stressful.
Angelica’s journey is a touching reminder of the power of self-love and acceptance. Embrace your uniqueness! 🌟💖
