DMV rules mom’s vanity plates inappropriate after 15 years
Wendy Auger, a mother of four from Rochester, New Hampshire, was shocked when the state’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) demanded she surrender the vanity plates she had used for 15 years. Her plates, which read “PB4WEGO,” were a gentle reminder to her sons to use the potty before getting in the car.
Despite the harmless message, the DMV determined that the plates referred to “sexual or excretory acts or functions.” In 2019, Wendy was instructed to turn in her vanity license plates.
“It would just stink if I don’t have it anymore,” said Wendy, who frequently received compliments on her hilarious plates. Referring to the state’s motto, “live free or die,” she added, “If I have to take it off the plate, then I’m not going to be able to live free.”
Wendy, a paralegal, expressed her frustration: “Who has a mom or dad or parental figure who hasn’t said that to kids before leaving the house? I’m not the type to sit here with a picket, but come on.” She emphasized that she wasn’t a political activist but believed the plates were non-offensive and part of her family’s identity.
The DMV’s letter demanded the surrender of the plates, citing the combination of letters as inappropriate. Wendy was given 10 days to turn in her plate and was offered the option to choose another customized plate at no extra cost.
After receiving the letter, Wendy shared the recall notice on Facebook along with photos of her plates. The post went viral, with many netizens supporting her. One commenter wrote, “Such a ridiculous situation… Not only is it funny and cute, it’s a really good reminder!” Another added, “What’s going on?! You’ve had that plate FOREVER.”
Encouraged by users to petition the recall, Wendy joked, “Live free or die my arse. I think ‘dmv sux’ will be my next one…but I may get pulled over quite often lol.”
Her post eventually captured the attention of New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, who overturned the ruling. He left Wendy a message saying: “Hey Wendy, It’s Chris Sununu. How are you? Just want to let you know we took care of that issue…sorry for that little bureaucratic hold-up…but obviously common sense prevailed.”
On August 28, 2019, Wendy shared a new Facebook message announcing her victory: “This Sassy Momma Has Her Plates!!!”
