Retired teacher’s brutally honest words to parents criticizing the system go viral
It’s important to note that this letter was written before the pandemic, before sweeping changes were made to ensure education could continue during COVID-19.
Many of these changes during that challenging time received mixed reactions from people in the US, showing that there are strong opinions about the state of the education system and potential solutions.
For Lisa Roberson, however, the issue isn’t with teachers, as some have claimed in recent years, but with the parents of the students themselves.
“As a retired teacher, I’m tired of people who know nothing about public schools or haven’t been in a classroom recently deciding how to fix our education system,” Lisa’s letter read.
“The teachers are not the problem! Parents are the problem! They’re not teaching their children manners, respect, or even basic social skills.
“The children come to school in expensive shoes but without pencils or paper. Who provides them? Often, it’s the teachers, out of their own pockets.
This was published in the newspaper today!
“Look at ‘failing’ schools and consider the parents and students. Do parents attend parent-teacher nights? Do they communicate with teachers regularly? Do they ensure their children have the necessary supplies and do their homework?
“Do they have working phone numbers? Do the students take notes and do their homework? Do they listen in class, or are they causing disruptions?
“When you consider these factors, you’ll see that it’s not the schools that are failing, but the parents. Teachers can’t do their job and the parents’ job. Until parents step up, nothing will improve!”
Needless to say, the letter caused quite a stir and raises valid points that deserve discussion.
